Data Center Security: IHK Certification Course Successfully Launched
According to current industry forecasts, data center capacity in Germany will more than double by 2030. At the same time, the demand for qualified security personnel who are familiar with the specific requirements of data centers and critical infrastructure is on the rise.
To meet this need, Pond Academy has developed the certificate course “Data Center Security Fundamentals (IHK).” The course provides practical, specialized knowledge for use in data center operations and was designed in close collaboration with the Chamber of Industry and Commerce and experienced industry representatives.
The course was also developed based on more than ten years of practical experience in the operational security management of data centers. The course content is based on Pond Security Service GmbH’s long-standing expertise as a security service provider for critical infrastructure, as well as on the experience of specialists and managers who have been responsible for the day-to-day operations of data centers and have helped build and further develop them. As a result, the course combines theoretical fundamentals, regulatory requirements, and proven best practices from the real-world data center environment.
The result is a modern training program specifically tailored to the needs of one of Germany's fastest-growing critical infrastructures.
Overview of the Course Structure and Content
The course consists of 50 class sessions and is divided into eight modules. The course content combines technical, organizational, and legal aspects of security work and is tailored to the requirements of day-to-day data center operations.
Topics covered include data center infrastructure, access control, physical security measures, emergency and crisis management, and the interfaces between physical and digital security.
The course combines lectures, group work, and practical case studies. The goal is to prepare security personnel for real-world challenges in data center operations and to equip them with the necessary expertise for professional deployment in critical infrastructure.
The course concludes with a two-part competency assessment:
Written Assessment of Competency
A standardized multiple-choice test assesses students' foundational knowledge and understanding of the material covered.
Technical Discussion
During the technical discussion, participants work through real-world scenarios from data center operations. The focus is on applying the knowledge they have acquired. Participants demonstrate how they would assess security risks, make decisions, and respond to real-life situations in day-to-day operations.
The decision of the IHK Examination Board
The Commission's feedback was clearly positive. Three points were highlighted in particular.
Strong practical focus
The participants demonstrated confidence in applying theoretical knowledge to real-world operational situations. Scenarios such as alarm management, access incidents, and visitor management were addressed in a structured and solution-oriented manner.
Structured Methodology
The Commission viewed positively the way participants in the technical discussions analyzed complex security incidents and developed logical solutions rather than reacting spontaneously.
In-depth understanding of KRITIS requirements
The participants not only formally addressed the specific requirements for critical infrastructure but also gained a deep understanding of their substance.
Five courses per year, soon to be offered in English as well
Germany is now one of Europe’s largest data center markets, and its expansion is proceeding at a rapid pace. According to the Bitkom Data Center Report, installed IT capacity in German data centers is growing steadily, driven by cloud services, AI applications, and the increasing digitization of critical infrastructure. This is also increasing the demand for qualified security personnel who are familiar with these requirements.
Following the successful pilot program, the course will become a permanent fixture on the Pond Academy calendar. Specifically, the following are planned:
Five scheduled runs per year
Four in German and one in English. Additional runs are available upon customer request.
An English-language version
For international data center operators and English-speaking security personnel, with fully translated course materials, workbooks, and scenarios.
Digitization of Written Competency Assessments
to streamline logistics and make the course accessible to a broader audience.

Answers to Your Questions About Data Center Security
The course provides specialized knowledge for security personnel working in data center operations: alarm management, access control, visitor management, escort procedures, and operational decision-making under pressure. The focus is on direct practical application.
It consists of two parts: a written assessment of competencies, which evaluates participants’ foundational knowledge and understanding of the course material, and a technical discussion in which participants work through practical scenarios related to data center operations. Both components are conducted in collaboration with the IHK.
The course is designed for security personnel who are currently working in data center operations or are expected to do so in the future. Companies can have their existing employees certified through the Pond Academy qualifizieren lassen.
Five sessions are scheduled each year: four in German and one in English. This ensures that the program is available on a regular basis, including for international teams. Additional sessions are available upon request.
An IHK certificate is a recognized mark of quality that demonstrates to clients, government agencies, and within the company itself that employees have been trained according to a certified standard. This is becoming increasingly important, especially in KRITIS environments.
Yes. An English-language version is currently in development and is scheduled to be offered starting in 2027 in order to also appeal to international data center operators and English-speaking security personnel.
